The beauty I find in nature, in the countryside, around the ocean, in the southwestern desert, or in a field of flowers, all provide a context, a place to begin.
My painting has become more abstract over the years. I am interested in creating work that is personally suggestive of a place, work that reflects my internal response to the environment around me. I feel myself led inward where images are amorphous and mutable, where I can explore the reality behind the reality, as I encourage those images to materialize out of the creative process.
Working in watercolor, acrylic, batik and mixed media, I am fascinated with the interconnectedness of color and form and enjoy experimenting with overlays and surface detail. I like using collage techniques and materials, such as water-base media, inks, crayons, fabrics, antique lace, canvas, papers and stitchery. Batik resist methods, which involves drawing with hot wax on cloth, adding brilliant colored vegetable dyes, then removing the wax are ways of achieving a myriad of interesting outcomes.
